Tom Schaffer, reporter for BCMB News, a monthly publication by grad students in the Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology program at Johns Hopkins honored Kara by writing a piece about the ins and outs of her career path. Due to busy schedules and differences in timezone, the interview was conducted by email, and Tom did a great job capturing the seminal events that motivated Kara to go to grad school, switch fields, try scientific editing, and finally try to settle down as a professor at Reed College. Hopefully this synopsis of a meandering scientific journey (which has really only just begun) is useful and maybe a little bit entertaining. You can read the full article on the BCMB News Blog…and the part about the “killer experiment” is all because of an inspirational talk Jeremy Nathans gave when Kara was in grad school.
