Siamese Chick!

Siamese Chick!

Coolest thing about teaching developmental bio, is discovering developmental anomalies. When my students were opening chicken eggs today, look what they found — a twinned embryo! Can’t wait to see how this one develops.

This looks pretty fantastic, but not being a biologist, please help me understand what I’m looking at.

    1. This is a ventral (belly) view of a developing chicken embryo. The head is at the top of the screen and the two developing bodies fork out from about where the heart is destined to develop. The very textured part around the embryo is mostly yolk and some of the other extra-embryonic membranes. Stay tuned for an update…will the embryo have one or two hearts? We’ll know later today.

  3. Thanks for the clarification. Waiting for the next update.
